Facts About Gambling & Online Casinos in Delaware

Despite its small size, Delaware is an excellent choice if you’re looking to gamble. There are three legal casinos in Delaware, and residents of the state can also play at online casinos that are connected to the three casinos. With so many options available, players want for little in this casino-friendly state.

History of Gambling in Delaware

Delaware’s history of gambling really started in 1975 when the lottery was created as a means to bringing revenue to the state. With lottery options including Hot Lotto, Lucky For Life, Mega Millions, Play 3, Play 4, and Powerball, the state found that the ticket sales were bringing in plenty of revenue to the General Fund. In fact, it brought in more than $214 million in 2014.

In the mid-1990s, video slot machines were allowed at three racetracks. This was the first big step towards legalizing video table games. In 2010, all eyes turned to allowing table games in local racetracks. Once again, the amount of potential revenue was of key interest. Chapter 219 makes it clear that lottery and casino games have helped the state both in terms of employment options and revenue. In fact, the General Assembly’s report stated that the addition of table gaming at approved sites could bring more than 700 job openings into the state. With that, the amendments to the law were passed and three racetracks added gaming areas.

Age Restrictions for Gambling in Delaware

State-run lotteries allow players 18 and up to purchase tickets. To play one of the video lottery or video table machines, players must be 21 or older.

Delaware’s Casino Gambling Outlook

Things keep looking up for Delaware casinos. In 2013, the state approved measures to establish online casinos in Delaware. The iGaming system introduced casino games that Delaware residents could play online. Each of the three casinos in Delaware have online casino games ranging from Blackjack to poker. In 2014, the state signed an agreement with Nevada to bring online poker to Delaware in 2015.

In addition to the introduction of online casinos in Delaware, the state also approved the development of three new brick and mortar casinos. As the racetrack casinos are struggling to compete with full-scale casinos in nearby states, the plan is to establish three expansive casino resorts in the state and was approved in 2015. These new casinos will add additional jobs and more revenue to the state.
