History of Gambling in Mississippi

Mississippi’s gambling history can go back centuries to the times when the Native American’s competed in games of stick ball in order to gain another person’s valuable possessions. Things progressed from there with the construction of a horse race track in the late-1790s. With firm footings in gambling, it might seem surprising that Mississippi is one of the few states where the government has not even legalized a state lottery.

The reality is that in the 1950s, a religious movement worked to get gambling banned permanently. As the public began shying away from establishments offering things like slot machines, Mississippi’s gambling industry collapsed. After the passage of the National Indian Gaming Act, the Choctaw tribe established their first casino. Soon, Senator Gollott pushed for legislation to legalize riverboat casinos in hopes of bringing in much-needed revenue. Gambling in Mississippi was legalized in 1990.

While the legislators were reluctant to consider allowing full online casinos, they did create an Internet Gaming and Sports Betting Task Force to look into the possibility of allowing online sports betting and lottery ticket sales. It was decided that now is not the time as the House Gaming Committee’s chairman stated that half of Mississippi’s residents do not even have Internet service.
